Econsultancy blogger Tom Albrighton, an experienced B2B marketing specialist, compared soaring asset values prior to the financial crisis to the recent surge in social media marketing activity.
<br /><br />
The expert said that, if the situation turned out to follow the same course, it would be &#8220;interesting to see what happens&#8221; when the sector hits its peak, sparking a downward spiral.
<br /><br />
He suggested that &#8220;a resurgence of interest in traditional marketing techniques like direct marketing … rather like investors flock to gold and bonds when shares crash,&#8221; could be seen.
<br /><br />
As well as a direct mail boom, Mr Albrighton claimed there would be a &#8220;feeling of embarrassment&#8221; over past enthusiasm and excessive hype about social media&#8217;s marketing potential.
<br /><br />
Earlier this month, a forecast from media firm MagnaGlobal indicated that revenues from direct media channels, including direct mail, would rise by around 0.8 per cent in 2011.

Trying to stay afloat in the crowded Tampa Bay seafood industry, Splash! started sending out 2000 direct mail postcards a month, just to supplement their existing  marketing efforts. They report an ongoing monthly response of 3-7% from their mailings, which brings in 60-140 extra customers every month.

The USPS manager of marketing mail, Thomas Foti, told the publication the move would help direct mailers gain traction with more digitally savvy consumers.

&#8220;We firmly believe that mobile barcodes add significant value to mail &#8211; they help increase response rates and they help establish relationships with those that don’t &#8230; necessarily already have a relationship with mail &#8211; for instance those in younger generations,&#8221; he said.

Both standard-class mail and first class will be eligble for a 3 percent discount, according to Post &amp; Parcel, as long as the QR codes are used to &#8220;market, promote or educate&#8221; consumers, and not just for a marketer&#8217;s own tracking.

Experts note that QR codes may be the best way to connect print marketing more easily to the internet, and that savvy practitioners should be looking for ways to fold such techniques into existing efforts.]]></content:encoded>

His opinion was echoed by Tom Fenske of Fenske Media Corp, who said that those using direct mail services often enjoy high response rates.

The expert noted that other media channels work well when used &#8220;hand-in-hand&#8221; with direct mail.
<br /><br />
Mr Fenske concluded that while other mediums are &#8220;valuable&#8221; it is mail that &#8220;pays the bills&#8221;.

This comes after Bob Jones, president of The Mighty Copywriter told the Street that direct mail yields great results.

He observed that many marketers are starting to rediscover the channel as they become dissatisfied with certain digital methods.

<br /><br />
First, businesses must offer something reasonable to consumers, because as Geller points out, no one believes they will receive something expensive for free.
<br /><br />
However, customers still must have a reason to buy, she writes. They need to be able to visualize their savings in tangible terms – be it time or money.
<br /><br />
Finally, creativity counts for a lot. &#8220;An offer that is specific to a product or service being offered will get the highest response. Exclusive offers are also appealing,&#8221; Inc. writes.
<br /><br />
When a piece is ready to send, small businesses may want to consider saturation mailing – a service offered by the U.S. Postal Office that targets specific zip codes.
